ADI unveils two solutions to ensure energy meter magnetic immunity

Analog Devices has introduced what it claims are the industry's first fully isolated metrology chipset and isolated a/d converter designed for polyphase energy metering applications.

The company says the two solutions enable the use of shunt resistor sensing elements instead of current transformers, thereby providing immunity to magnetic field interference and tampering. "We wanted to completely resolve the issue of magnetic fields, so we integrated iCoupler and isoPower technology that does not rely on any ferromagnetic materials," Vitaly Goltsberg, ADI technical marketing manager told New Electronics. "Because it's a highly integrated solution, it reduces the system cost and size." The ADE7978 metrology chipset includes the ADE7978 3-phase metrology ic combined with up to four ADE7933 full isolated A/D converter ics. The ADE7913 is similar to the ADE7933, but features an SPI interface for users who wish to incorporate their own metrology algorithms. Both devices incorporate the company's iCoupler and isoPower technologies to implement isolated signal transfer and dc/dc power conversion across a 5kV rated insulation barrier.
