According to a report from Global Market Insights which looks at the embedded systems market, and has a title that runs to a whopping six lines, it's expecting it to be worth $160 billion by 2026.

That growth is coming from the increased implementation of embedded systems across a wide range of applications in the automotive, telecommunications, military, industrial, healthcare and consumer spaces and has been driven, according to the report, by the real-time functioning capabilities of embedded systems that are needed for safety applications.

The report says that the FPGA hardware component is the fastest-growing segment and that is being attributed to the growing transformation being seen in industrial infrastructures.

Government initiatives to enhance the utilization of automated machinery across industries is seen as helping to boost demand for FPGAs which, in turn, is set to boost the embedded system market.

More and more industries are now switching to automation in the supply chain, manufacturing, and assembly processes with the incorporation of robotics, all of which is driving demand for embedded systems.

Turning to healthcare applications, the report sees significant gains through 2026 due to the rising adoption of embedded systems in rugged operating conditions with high-temperature fluctuations and exposure to vibrations & shocks. In healthcare applications, embedded systems are used to amplify sound in electronic stethoscopes, to monitor vital signs, and in various imaging systems such as CT scan & MRI.

Looking at Europe's embedded system market, the report is predicting growth of around 5% during the forecast period, with demand coming from a combination of advanced technologies in vehicles and tele-medicines.

Network embedded systems held over 5% market share in 2019 and the report expects only modest growth till 2026. These systems are connected to various networks, such as LAN, WAN, and the internet, to access resources.

The report makes interesting reading highlighting a number of critical developments.
For example, it sees the growing adoption of in-vehicle electronics and the demand for car-to-road communication systems creating lucrative growth opportunities for the embedded system market, while rising demand for acquisition control systems and data feedback for automation will positively impact the industrial market for embedded systems.

With a host of big players in this space, including the likes of Microsoft, Texas Instruments, NXP and Atmel the reports suggests that embedded system providers will be focusing not only on the development of innovative products, but will also be looking to enhance existing product ranges in order to stay competitive.
