Beta LAYOUT, the PCB prototype specialist has long pondered the issue of tracking PCBs from cradle to grave. Bar codes, serial numbers and labels were not suitable for use in their real life applications, specifically for real estate and design issues. When Murata launched the Magicstrap® Module its characteristics allowed the Beta LAYOUT innovation team to finally consider embedding the module inside the PCB. Beta LAYOUT's patented process to mill a PCB and to insert the module and backfill with epoxy is the simplest and most cost effective process to embed the RFiD module. The Magicstrap® UHF frequency band results in shorter wavelengths and thus smaller antenna design than LF or HF chips. The Magicstrap® product combines a conventional UHF RFID IC (currently the UCODE IC by NXP Semiconductors) with a ceramic multilayer structure carrying an adaptive matching circuit The integrated matching circuit enables the ground plane of the PCB to be used as an antenna to achieve read ranges of up to several meters. The device has a user memory of 512bits and each module has its own unique identifier number for security and tracking purposes. The highly innovative solution offered by Beta LAYOUT utilizes another feature of the Magicstrap® product. The matching circuit included in its multi-layer structure also works as an antenna. As a consequence, the MAGIC-PCB® alone can be used as a complete UHF tag.
