Wireless modules ease integration challenge

Two 2.4GHz wireless modules, based around Texas Instruments’ CC3200 and CC3100 SimpleLink chipsets, are compliant with IEEE802.11b/g/n. Measuring 13.2 x 21.45 x 2.65mm, the modules are said to ease the task of incorporating wireless internet connectivity to a host of embedded applications and IoT designs.

Both the Type 1JP and Type1JQ modules have SPI and UART interfaces, 16Mbit of flash and a 40MHz clock. Each module is constructed on a PCB, with matching components, a PCB antenna, the wireless transceiver and associated logic enclosed in a metal case. A number of GPIO pins is provided for attaching sensors and other devices.

The Type 1JP module, which uses the CC3100 chipset, attaches to a host microcontroller to control communication. The Type 1JQ, meanwhile, uses the CC3200 chipset, whose Cortex-M4 MCU and 256kbyte of RAM is said to allow it to operate as a ‘host less’ application.

Both pin compatible modules remain compatible with second-generation SimpleLink modules, says the company, allowing customers to upgrade designs without the need to rework hardware.
