Providing a wider viewing angle

GTK has unveiled its O-Film (Optical Film) technology, which, when used in conjunction with standard TFT displays, is claimed to improve the achievable viewing angles.

The O-Film is a polarising agent that can be applied to a display via optical bonding and redirects light, and is said to provide all round viewing angles to any standard TFT to which it is applied. This allows designers to use TFTs in applications that would normally require more expensive in-plane switching (IPS) solutions. It can also be used on capacitive touchscreen devices.

“O-Film is a relatively new technology and not yet widely recognised in the marketplace but it is an extremely cost-effective solution for applications where improved, all-round viewing angles are needed,” Clive Dickinson, business manager for optoelectronics at GTK, said. “OEMs can use standard, off-the-shelf TFT displays, eliminating the need to choose more expensive technologies such as IPS to achieve the performance they require for their finished products.”

The O-Film is especially suitable for use in applications such as medical instrumentation, barcode scanners and EPOS devices.
