Intelligent power modules enable efficient, reliable appliances

STMicroelectronics has released 600V, second generation intelligent SLIMM power modules that are claimed to enhance the efficiency and reliability of domestic and industrial appliances, such as motor drives in compressors, pumps and fans. Targeting drives working up to 20kHz in hard-switching circuits, ST’s modules are said to enable an increase in energy efficiency over application power outputs from 300W to 3kW.

The devices build on the success of ST's SLLIMM family of dual-in-line modules. These provide a direct connection between a low-voltage microcontroller and a mains-powered electric motor, replacing up to 10 active components. The SLLIMM second series offers higher performance, increased collector current range, and additional package-technology options that can reduce the cost of the application by enabling the use of smaller heatsinks.

The SLLIMM second series features a maximum controller current of 35A at 25°C and an internal configuration with two drivers - one high-side driver and one low-side driver - and dedicated trench-gate field-stop IGBTs, claimed to result in the industry's best compromise between conduction and switching losses, along with robustness and EMI behaviour.
