Industry's fastest isolated current sense amplifier

Silicon Labs has introduced an isolated current sense amplifier claimed to deliver the industry's highest bandwidth and lowest signal delay. The Si8920 isolated amplifier provides a current shunt measurement solution suitable for power control systems operating in harsh environments such as industrial motor drives, solar inverters, high-voltage power converters, uninterruptible power supplies and electric/hybrid-electric vehicle systems.

The Si8920's low voltage, differential input is suitable for measuring voltage across a current shunt resistor or for any place where a sensor must be isolated from the control system. The output is a differential analogue signal amplified by 8.1x or 16.2x.

The device's 0.75µs signal delay is claimed to allow control systems to respond quickly to fault conditions or changes in load. Offset drift of 1 µV/°C and gain drift of 60ppm/°C mean that accuracy is maintained over the entire operating temperature range of -40 to 125°C. A common mode transient immunity of 75kV is said to help the Si8920 to deliver accurate measurements even in the presence of high power switching like that found in a motor drive system or inverter.
