e-paper display uses less power

Pervasive Displays’ advanced technology is to be used in the intelligent call-to-action product Spur from UK-based start-up ContinuumBridge.

Incorporating Pervasive Displays’ 2in e-paper module to form a simple user interface, Spur consists of remote, battery-powered units that are wirelessly connected to a cloud server.

When activated, the units communicate with the connected network and give instant visual feedback to the user. This flags that the service request is being dealt with. Because they are not reliant on any additional infrastructure, Spur units are said to be quick, easy and cost effective to deploy.

The e-paper technology allows the Spur units to run for prolonged periods without needing battery replacement — over five years based on normal operational circumstances.

According to the company, this is achieved because of the low power capabilities of the display modules. They are said to present a mechanism for rendering text and graphics that, unlike TFTs or OLEDs, only draw power when the displayed content is changed.

The company claims the modules also deliver performance in relation to image retention and sunlight readability – making them suitable for outdoor applications.
