Buck regulator generates 0 to 14.5V VOUT

The LTC3623 from Linear Technology is a ±5A high efficiency, current mode synchronous buck regulator whose output is adjustable from 14.5V to 0V. The regulator uses a 50µA current reference, combined with a single resistor, to set the output voltage for all of the regulators.

The LTC3623’s bipolar ±5A sink and source capability, wide VIN and VOUT capability, current mode control for tight line and load regulation, low external parts count and parallel capability are said to suit modern multirail systems, tracking supplies, ASIC substrate biasing, DDR memory supplies, thermo electric cooler systems, and dual-cell Li-Ion applications.

The regulator’s on-chip trimmed reference achieves accuracy of ±1%. Furthermore, output regulation and transient response are independent of output voltage. The user can drive the LTC3623’s ISET pin with an external voltage supply to program the converter’s VOUT. Additionally, output voltage tracking or soft-start is programmable via the ISET pin for applications that require power sequencing.

The device is available in a thermally enhanced, 24-lead 3 x 5mm QFN package, with both E and I grades specified for temperatures ranging from –40 to 125°C.
