Battery charger chip saves time and money

A battery-charger management chip with improved functional integration has been developed for wearable and portable applications by STMicroelectronics.

Some of the key features of the STBC02 include an integrated protection circuit module and an integrated power path. The STBC02 also integrates energy management components: a linear battery charger, a 150mA low drop-out voltage regulator, two SPDT load switches, a smart reset/watchdog function and a protection circuit module.

The device uses a constant current/constant voltage algorithm to charge the battery; the fast charge and the pre-charge current can be both programmed independently using dedicated resistors. A battery under/over temperature condition can be detected by using an external NTC thermistor. The battery floating voltage is programmable up to 4.45V.

All the chip’s functions are controlled via the SWIRE protocol that only needs one microcontroller I/O pin.

The STBC02 draws less than 10nA from the connected battery in shipping mode conditions and is available in the Flip Chip 30 package.
