World's first ‘rollable’ video screen unveiled by Sony

1 min read

Sony has developed a prototype video screen that is so flexible it can be rolled around a pencil.

The 'super-flexible' 80µm thick screen uses high performance organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) and measures 4.1in. To create the OLED, Sony developed transistors with a new organic semiconductor material that it claims has eight times the current modulation of conventional OTFTs. The material, a peri-Xanthenoxanthene (PXX) derivative, is stable under exposure to oxygen, moisture, light and heat and improved current modulation. The research revealed that the panel is capable of reproducing moving images while being repeatedly rolled up around a cylinder with a radius of 4mm and stretched. The company said that even after 1000 cycles of repeatedly rolling up and stretching the display, there was no clear degradation in the display's ability to reproduce moving images. Future applications include flexible mobile devices, including home use televisions, screens for industrial applications and electronic newspapers, books or magazines that can be rolled up and put in the user's pocket.
