US university lab launches IoT IP test service

The University of New Hampshire’s InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) has launched an service through which it will provide custom IP test for a range of IoT products. According to the group, this move will help to improve IoT interoperability, reduce time to market and enhance the customer experience.

“As the world becomes increasingly connected and demand for IoT devices grows, companies are facing the challenge of how best to ensure interoperability, functionality, and security, while maximising quality of experience for customers,” said Timothy Winters, UNH-IOL’s senior executive, software and IP networking. “UNH-IOL IoT IP Testing Services will provide a competitive advantage by enabling emerging IoT companies to validate their devices through trusted, third-party interoperability testing.”

The lab – said to be one of the first to be approved to issue the IPv6 Ready logo – will offering customers access to a test bed, custom IP testing services and networking experts with broad experience in IPv6 protocols and testing. Emerging loT companies will gain competitive benefits from the group’s services, it claims, including increased confidence in interoperability between security functionality, and accelerated market deployment cycles.

Lancen LaChance, VP of product management with GlobalSign, said: “Ensuring IoT device security and identity is essential, as illustrated by recent DDoS attacks. By having their devices validated through the IoT IP Testing Services, IoT device manufacturers can be certain their products are optimised for and compliant with operator security requirements and changing network conditions.”

The IPv6 Ready Logo, which validates basic IPv6 functionality, will address privacy and DNS services, as well as future security RFCs such as data transport layer security and simple certificate enrollment protocol (SCEP).
