Universal mobile chargers by 2012

Global mobile phone manufacturers and network operators have announced the move to a new universal charger by 2012.

The agreement has been made at the Mobile World Congress, Barcelona by the GSMA along with 17 leading mobile operators, such as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Vodafone and Sony Ericsson. The aim of the initiative is to ensure that the common format – a micro USB plug – will reduce standby energy consumption by half. Michael O’Hara, marketing director for the GSMA said: “This is a broad agreement that will move the industry to a single, energy efficient charger for all mobile phones.” The group agreed that the majority of new mobile phones will support a universal charging connector from January 1 2012.
