Turing researchers get Cray supercomputer for data analytics

Big Data researchers at the Alan Turing Institute will now be able to perform large scale data analytics on Cray Urika-GX supercomputer hosted at the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre. Provided via a collaboration between Cray, Intel and the Institute, the dedicated hardware platform will support the development of applications for engineering and technology, defence and security and other sectors.

Sir Alan Wilson, CEO of the Alan Turing Institute, noted: “Our researchers require powerful computing technology and the Cray system will be an important addition to the Turing’s data science toolkit. We look forward to opening it up to our community of researchers and enabling their innovation to thrive.”

The Urika-GX platform features a scalable analytics software environment designed to support large-scale data science activity. It features the Cray Graph Engine, which provides large-scale graph pattern matching and discovery operations across complex collections of data. Also supported is the Apache Spark cluster engine and the Apache Hadoop software library, both providing tools for large-scale analytics and machine learning operations.
