Thermal management package integrates mechanical and electronic design domains

Mentor Graphics has announced FloTHERM XT, a software package that is said to address electronic challenges and geometric complexity. Electronic challenges, says Mentor, are driven by increasing speed, density and power consumption, while geometric complexity is being driven by decreasing size and the increased prevalence of complex product shapes.

FloTHERM XT interconnects the mechanical (mda) and electronic design automation (eda) domains, providing an electronics cooling simulation solution that supports earlier virtual prototyping, fewer design iterations and advanced 'what if' analysis. The results, it believes, include improved product quality and faster time to market benefits. "FloTHERM XT was developed to support today's most innovative electronics components and systems," said Erich Buergel, general manager of Mentor Graphics' Mechanical Analysis Division. "We have combined our best in class technologies from FloTHERM and FloEFD with an easy to use interface that will serve both the mechanical and electronic design worlds and believe FloTHERM XT will be a 'game changer' in electronics cooling due to the ease with which mda and eda data can be used to create the single best design." Mentor says the direct integration of FloTHERM XT with pcb design flows will reduce data translation and costly errors and adds that FloTHERM XT is 'the only solution on the market' that allows engineers to work with geometry created in the mda or eda worlds.
