Taiwanese researchers claim 9nm 'breakthrough'

Taiwanese researchers claim to have unveiled an advanced microchip technology which marks a breakthrough in piling ever more memory into ever smaller spaces.

Taiwanese researchers claim to have developed a circuit measuring just nine nanometres across. Ho Chia-hua, who is heading the project at the state run National Nano Device Laboratories, says that the chip using the new memory technology has about 20 times the storage capacity of current memory units and consumes just 1/200th of the electricity. "Researchers used to believe that 20 nanometres was the limit for microchip technologies," said Chia-hua. According to National Nano Device Laboratories, using such technology, a 1cm2 chip will be capable of storing 1million pictures or 100hours of 3d movies, said Yang Fu-liang, the director general of the Laboratories.
