Switched mode battery topology offers 'maximum charging efficiency'

Intersil has announced an integrated battery charger which it claims is the industry's most efficient for 1 and 2 cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries.

The ISL9220 is based on a true switched mode topology and, according to Intersil, minimises charge time while providing maximum power efficiency and heat reduction, using synchronous pulse width modulation technology with integrated mosfets. The device's 1.2MHz switching frequency allows the use of small external inductors and capacitors. The device is said to provide up to 2A charge current with charge voltage accuracy of 0.5%. Programmable input current limiting is included along with programmable pre-charge and fast charge settings. Integrated overvoltage protection on the adapter/usb power input protects both the battery and circuitry from damage due to excessive voltage on the input. A programmable safety timer is provided to terminate charging if the battery fails to charge in the programmed period. The ISL9220 can also monitor the battery temperature and discontinue charging if the temperature becomes unsafe.
