ST announces ‘world’s smallest’ pico projector for smart phones

Users of next generation mobile devices may soon be able to project content from their screens onto any surface in sharp, vivid colour, according to STMicroelectronics. The company has announced a collaboration with bTendo on what it claims to be the world's smallest pico projector.

The device measures less than 2.5cm3 in volume and is based on bTendo's scanning laser projection engine technology. According to ST, it allows for sharp and crisp images that are superior to other projectors currently on the market. It incorporates two mems based micro mirror actuation devices within the system's optical engine and an advanced video processing chip. The projection engine is designed to offer low power consumption and has built in support for Mobile Industry Processor Interface. "The embedded projector solution will let people share their media with others and enjoy the option of expanding their display even for their own personal viewing," said Benedetto Vigna, group vice president and general manager, ST.
