Samsung begins production of 22in transparent lcds

Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of a 22in transparent lcd panel which it claims has the world's best transparency rate of more than 20%. According to Samsung, users can look right through it in the same way as glass.

Utilising ambient light such as sunlight, Samsung says the panel consumes 90% less electricity compared to conventional lcd panels that rely on back unit lighting. It has a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) resolution and HDMI and usb interface. It will be available in black and white as well as colour. "Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication, said Younghwan Park, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics' lcd business. "With the world's first mass production of the transparent lcd panel, Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global market."
