RMS to dc converter ensures 'best in class' dynamic range

1 min read

Analog Devices has unveiled a new integrated rms to dc converter, which it claims features best in class 100µV to 3V of usable dynamic range and the ability to measure extremely low signal levels with no drop in settling time.

According to the mixed signal and analogue specialist, the AD8436 also features ac conversion accuracy to better than ±0.5% and is the first rms to dc converter specified to operate in the extended industrial temperature range of -40 to 125°C. The device is immune to temperature, crest factor and supply voltage variations and comes in a 4 x 4mm package. This is integrated with an FET input and precision dc buffer amplifiers and consumes 300uA of power. The converter is targeted at remote, portable battery powered instrumentation, energy and automotive applications. ADI claims the AD8436 SoC design computes the precise dc equivalent of the rms value and provides a level of linearity and accuracy across the entire input range that enables engineers to design systems with 90dB of dynamic range. In addition, the device is said to extend the crest factor to 10, which is approximately double the current industry standard digital solution. It is laser trimmed and characterised at 300mV rms input and comes with dual and single power supplies.
