Op amp drives SAR a/d converters to 0V on single 5V supply

A new op amp unveiled by Linear Technology can drive successive approximation register (SAR) a/d converters to true zero on a single 5V supply.

The LTC6360's integrated ultralow noise charge pump provides an internal negative rail, eliminating the need for a negative supply. Typical rail to rail output single supply amplifiers only swing to within a few hundred millivolts of ground, however, according to Linear, LTC6360 provides improved linearity and dynamic range in applications that benefit from a true zero output swing. The device, which is suitable for driving 16 and 18bit SAR a/d converters, features input offset voltage of less than 250µV and noise is 2.3nV/vHz. It settles to 16bits in 150ns and achieves a closed loop 3dB bandwidth of 250MHz. Harmonic distortion (HD2/HD3) is 103/-9dBc at fIN = 40kHz and it can be used as a buffer to achieve low output noise as it is unity gain stable. The output is designed to drive a series 10? resistor and 330pF capacitor filter network, although Linear adds that larger load capacitances can be driven.
