O2 starts NFC trial

Mobile phone operator O2 has started consumer trials of Near Field Communication (NFC). In the six month trial, which is based on Topaz tags from Innovision Research & Technology, 500 subscribers will use Nokia 6131 NFC enabled handsets and a supply of NFC tags.

“This trial is very exciting as it is the first of its kind in the UK, and we are delighted to be invited to be a major partner alongside O2 and Nokia,” explains Ken Robertson, who manages the Contactless Tags and Ticketing business at Innovision Research & Technology. Triallists have been provided with Topaz tags in a ‘virtual wallet’. The tags are preprogrammed with useful information like partner website links and telephone numbers, while the triallists themselves can program others. Innovision believes the most interesting aspect will be seeing how consumers program the Topaz tags and what innovative uses they can find for them.
