New IoT networking protocol established
Seven companies – Yale Security, Silicon Labs, Samsung Electronics, Nest Labs, Freescale, Big Ass Fans and ARM – have formed the Thread Group, aiming to support a new IP based wireless networking protocol that allows more rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT).
"Existing wireless networking approaches were introduced long before the IoT gained ground," said Vint Cerf, advisor to the Thread Group. "The Thread protocol takes existing technologies and combines the best parts of each to provide a better way to connect products in the home."

Using proven standards and IPv6 technology with 6LoWPAN as its foundation, Thread is said to offer: reliable networks; secure networks; simple connectivity; and low power. Existing IEEE based 802.15.4 wireless devices will be able to run Thread following a software enhancement, the Group claims.
Amongst the features on offer with Thread include self healing mesh networks that feature 'banking class' encryption, ease of installation and battery friendly operation. More than 250 devices can be hooked up into a Thread based network that supports direct Internet and cloud access for each device.
