Renesas Technology has announced what it claims to be the only low power microcontroller to provide 48kbytes of on chip Flash memory in a 32pin QFN package.

The H8/38606F Super Low Power microcontroller has been designed for the next generation of low power smart sensor applications. It incorporates an H8/300H CPU core, offering low power consumption and on chip flash memory. It features a fast oscillator start up feature, where the main oscillator can start up in around 20us using an external resonator, making it suitable for an application which spends most of its time asleep in the lowest power modes and then wakes to take readings or to communicate. The asynchronous timer on the H8/38606F makes the device suitable for battery powered applications which count pulses and keep time, being able to count external pulses and use its internal real time clock to achieve an average power consumption of around 0.5 uA. According to Renesas, an on chip high resolution 10bit A/D converter with a wide sampling range makes the device suitable for applications such as water and flow meters. The mcu supports a number of methods of low power communications, including a USART with built in IrDA interface that can be driven at up to 2400baud from a 32kHz oscillator. A 16bit timer and two on board analogue comparators are also designed to provide solutions for commonly used power and data over two wire communications schemes.
