Maxim Integrated Products has introduced two Hi-Speed USB 2.0 automotive grade protectors with iPod/iPhone fast charge detection and USB host charger detection for all USB gadgets.

The MAX16919/MAX16969 protectors' fast charge detection supports both Hi-Speed USB (480Mb/s) and full speed USB (12Mb/s) operation, which enables consumers to recharge USB devices while driving. According to Maxim, the devices are the only fully integrated automotive grade USB protectors, combining several automotive specific features, such as short to battery and short to ground protections. The protectors are suitable for automotive radio, navigation, connectivity, and USB hub applications and Maxim is offering system level modelling and simulation support. The integrated host charger detection circuitry and the adjustable current capability (3A) allow the USB peripheral devices to be charged quickly, while its on resistance BUS switch – the industry's lowest according to Maxim, is designed to minimise line drop, ensuring USB compliance. "Maxim is the industry leader for automotive grade USB protection," said Kent Robinett, managing director at Maxim Integrated Products. "As the newest members of the company's automotive USB protection devices, the MAX16919/MAX16969 reflect the industry's advances in mobile integration within the automotive environment." The devices are available in a 16pin QSOP package and operate over the -40 to 105°C temperature range.
