Lowest cost dsp launched

Responding to customer demand for smaller, more powerful and less expensive digital signal processing, Analog Devices has launched the Blackfin ADSP-BF592.

The device can support 800MMACs at 400MHz, while consuming as little as 88mW. According to Rich Murphy, business development manager for Analog's processors-dsp core technology group, the part makes dsp practical for many power constrained and small form factor applications in the industrial, medical, video, audio and general purpose markets. "Customers can now add high performance dsp to products that, due to cost and/or power constrictions, they were unable to before," he claimed. This device will cost $3 in volume; previously, the cheapest Blackfin was $4.95 in volume. The device uses the standard Blackfin core. Murphy said: "We have been careful to not add to the cost and the smaller package makes the device cheaper. While it has a minimal feature set, it offers good value."
