LG announces mass production of flexible smartphone displays

LG is to start mass producing flexible oled display panels for smartphones. The South Korean electronics giant says it hopes to start selling the first handsets with the technology in 2014.

"Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year," said the company's executive vp and chief technology officer, Dr Sang Deog Yeo. LG's flexible oled panel is built on plastic substrates instead of glass. The company says that a protective film on the back of the display makes it 'unbreakable' as well as bendable. The 6in display is vertically concave from top to bottom with a radius of 700mm. LG claims it is the thinnest (0.44mm) and lightest (7.2g) of its kind.
