Boosted by record sales, Jaguar Land Rover is planning to recruit 1000 electronic and software engineers over the next year. The engineers, who will mainly be based in the UK, will work on new models, including electric cars.

And the carmaker will work with virtual British band Gorillaz to recruit the engineers via the Gorillaz app. Potential candidates will be set a number of challenges, including assembling the Jaguar I-PACE Concept, and code breaking challenges to test for curiosity, persistence, lateral thinking and problem solving skills. Successful game players will be fast-tracked through Jaguar Land Rover’s recruitment process.

“As the automotive industry transforms over the next decade, fuelled by software innovation, we have to attract the best talent and that requires a radical rethink of how we recruit,” said head of electrical engineering Alex Heslop. “Here we’ve found an engaging way to recruit a diverse talent pool in software systems, cyber systems, app development and graphics performance. It will be the first of its kind.”

JLR announced in 2016 a partnership with Gorillaz in which Noodle, the band’s lead guitarist, would become a global ambassador, with a focus on encouraging young women into engineering.
