iPhone 6 to feature wraparound AMOLED display?

If you're planning on buying a shiny new iPhone 5S this summer, you might want to consider holding off.

According to a recent patent application filed by Apple, a full wraparound display with no buttons could be in the works for the iPhone 6. The patent calls for an enclosed 'transparent housing', with a flexible AMOLED display panel so that content can be displayed from any part of the frame. Further to this, Apple wants the smartphone to feature no physical buttons, with actions such as unlocking being achieved through gestures, such as running a finger along the side of the device. The patent application reads: "The majority of portable electronic device manufacturers utilise a common form factor consisting generally of a flat planar form factor with a single surface dedicated mainly for use as a display surface, while the other surfaces remain largely unused, save for the occasional button or switch. "Although this form factor lends itself to electronic devices that are aesthetically pleasing and easy to handle… the size of the user interface is generally limited to a portion of the device that takes up less than half of the overall device surface area." Some believe this could mean the device will feature two AMOLED displays on top of one another to create the illusion of depth and mimic a 3D experience. Other features rumoured to be incorporated in the iPhone 6 handset include a Retina+ Sharp IGZO display, more than likely with a 1080p resolution, and an A7 quad core processor.
