According to Infineon, one of the most important European pilot line projects for sensors and sensor systems has been launched at its Dresden site. The IoSense project – Internet of Sensors – is intended to respond to the vast quantities of sensors required by the IoT. Cost effective production, the company notes, is a prerequisite.

“IoSense will further extend Infineon’s position in the field of sensor technology,” claimed Infineon’s CEO Dr Reinhard Ploss. “With an increasingly networked world and the IoT, the demand for such sensor solutions will see a dramatic rise. In addition, sensors are increasingly employed in smartphones and lifestyle products. We will benefit from this market growth through new sensor technologies and competitive production methods.”

IoSense, part of the European ECSEL programme for microelectronics, is designed to further strengthen Europe’s ability to produce flexible, application oriented and cost effective sensors and sensor systems. During the three year project, which has a €65million budget, 33 partners from six countries will perform R&D along the entire value chain.

As part of the project, IoSense is building pilot lines with complementary competencies ranging from the development of new sensor technologies, methods for competitive high-volume manufacturing and the creation of new applications.

Bert De Colvenaer, executive director of the ECSEL Joint Undertaking, added: “IoSense is an excellent example in terms of project set-up, consortium and objectives as it is contributing actively to sustainable well being, security and prosperity in Europe. It enables the countries to continue developing ambitious innovation and to strengthen global competitiveness in this critical technological area that is impacting both economy and societal life sustainably.”
