Intel Xeon processors to power 10petaflop supercomputer

A 10petaflop (or 10,000trillion operations per second) supercomputer is set to power on in early 2013.

Deployed by the Texas Advanced Computing Center and University of Texas, 20% of the 'Stampede' HPC Linux cluster's performance will be delivered by future Intel Xeon E5 processors. 80% - equivalent to 8petaflops – will be provided by Intel Many Integrated Core architecture coprocessors, codenamed 'Knight's Corner', pictured. According to Intel, when it is operational at the beginning of 2013, Stampede is expected to be among the most powerful computers in the world.
