Intel acquires Mindspeed’s wireless technology

When Mindspeed was recently acquired by M/A Com, its wireless infrastructure division was left on the side. However, the company noted that it was in 'advanced discussions' regarding that division's fate.

Now, Intel has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 'certain assets' of Mindspeed's wireless infrastructure division. This is the division in which the remains of picoChip can be found. Rose Schooler, pictured, general manager of Intel's Communications and Storage Infrastructure Group, said: "Through this acquisition, Intel will gain a wireless infrastructure team with deep experience in delivering signal processing related technologies and IP for base stations." According to Schooler, Intel can deliver on three of the four key processing workloads in the communications sector: application processing; control processing; and packet processing. The remaining workload is signal processing and Schooler says the acquisition will help to achieve the remaining goal.
