IDT unveils ‘world's first’ piezoelectric MEMS oscillators

Analogue and mixed signal specialist IDT has launched what it claims to be the world's first commercially available oscillators incorporating piezoelectric microelectromechanical system (pMEMS) resonators.

Targeted at cloud computing designs, consumer applications requiring multiple outlets and communications and networking equipment, IDT says the new devices are well suited to replace traditional quartz based oscillators in any application due to their high native frequencies. "IDT's piezoelectric MEMS technology is a culmination of internal development with over 40 patents granted or filed to date," said IDT ceo Ted Tewksbury. "The MEMS timing market is expected to grow rapidly over the next several years and we plan to garner a large share with our superior technology and strong value proposition." The oscillators are available in industry standard pin and function compatible plastic packages and incorporate the passive pMEMS resonator in the 'world's smallest' hermetically sealed wafer level package.
