Heliatek sets solar cell efficiency record

Heliatek has set what it believes to be a world record with organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells that achieve an efficiency of 10.7%. Measurements were undertaken by independent testing facility SGS which tested the cells at low light and at temperatures of up to 80°C.

Dr Martin Pfeiffer, co-founder and cto of Heliatek, said: "Heliatek is the only solar company in the world that uses the deposition of small organic molecules in a low temperature, roll to roll vacuum process. Our solar tandem cells are made of nanometres thin layers of high purity and uniformity. This enables us to literally engineer the cell architecture to systematically improve efficiency and lifetime." The results under low light showed that efficiency gradually increased. At an irradiation of 100W/m², it was 15 % higher compared to the standard efficiency measured at 1,000W/m². At high temperatures, efficiency remained constant. This is in contrast to traditional solar technology, where efficiency drops by 15 to 20% at elevated temperatures. The company believes it will achieve 15% efficiency within the next few years.
