Global semi sales climb 5%

Worldwide semiconductor revenue increased to $315billion last year, up 5% from $299.9bn in 2012.

According to Gartner, revenue for the top 25 semiconductor vendors increased by 6.9% in 2013, driven largely by growth in the memory market. It also accounted for more of the industry's total revenue; at 70%, up from 68.8% in 2012. Intel saw a second year of revenue contraction with sales down 1%, mostly due to falling PC sales. However, the firm still managed to retain its No. 1 position for the 22nd consecutive year, with 15.4% share of the market. MediaTek and Qualcomm topped Gartner's Relative Industry Performance (RIP) Index analysis by significantly outgrowing their peers in the mobile handset market. MediaTek accomplished this by focusing on the low-tier and mid-tier segments in China and other emerging markets; while Qualcomm dominated the Tier 1 OEMs and high end segments.
