Fastest dram yet
DRAM supplier Elpida has unveiled what is says is the fastest dram. The 512Mbit device, which runs at 4.8GHz, is based on Rambus' XDR memory architecture. The part supports data transfer rates of up to 9.6Gbyte/s, making it suitable for high performance, high volume applications.
Sharon Holt, Rambus’ senior vice president of worldwide sales, licensing and marketing, pictured, said: “We are proud to work with Elpida to advance the roadmap for XDR to 4.8GHz, achieving the world’s fastest dram.”
The device, organised in eight banks (x16/x8/x4), delivers six times the peak bandwidth of DDR2-800 memories. Manufactured on Elpida’s 70nm process, the device comes in a 104ball fbga.
“Demand for memory bandwidth in next generation products is growing rapidly as high definition image data becomes more popular,” said Yoshitaka Kinoshita, from Elpida’s Digital Consumer Division. “Working with Rambus on XDR DRAM, we can provide the most cost effective, high bandwidth memory solution.”
