A number of leading UK universities have been given funding to set up training centres for post-graduate science and engineering students.

More than 3,500 students are to benefit from the £350million EPSRC scheme. Of the 70 new Centres for Doctorial Training (CDTs), UCL and the University of Cambridge have been asked to lead research into photonics and electronics. The Integrated Photonic and Electronic Systems (IPES) centre will bring together multi-disciplinary, cutting edge research activities from groups in photonics, communications, electronic engineering, nanotechnology and chemical engineering. The funding will enable five cohorts of PhD students to be trained at the centre over the next eight years. Science Minister David Willetts said: "Scientists and engineers are vital to our economy and society. It is their talent and imagination, as well as their knowledge and skills that inspire innovation and drive growth across a range of sectors, from manufacturing to financial services. "I am particularly pleased to see strong partnerships between universities, industry and business among the new centres announced today. This type of collaboration is a key element of our industrial strategy and will continue to keep us at the forefront of the global science race."
