Engineering student numbers increasing

The number of students accepted to follow engineering courses at UK universities has risen to a recent high, according to data released by UCAS, the body which coordinates university applications.

The figures show that 27,155 students were accepted into engineering courses in 2013 – an increase of almost 2000 over 2012 and 3500 more than 2008. The 2013 engineering intake represents 5.5% of all students entering universities. Of these, 4845 students have enrolled on electronic and electrical engineering courses, an increase of 200 over 2012. In total, UCAS placed 495,600 people into higher education in the 2013 cycle, an increase of 30,700 (6.6%) over 2012 and the highest number recorded. The increase is said to come almost equally from an increase in applicants (3.6% to 677,400) and the largest increase in over a decade in the proportion of these applicants accepted (73.2%), some 2% more than 2012.
