Embedded World 2014: Wind River readies VxWorks for the IoT

1 min read

A new version of Wind River's VxWorks real time operating system (RTOS) has been launched to help companies make the most of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Unveiled for the first time at Embedded World in Nuremburg, VxWorks 7 has been re-architected to offer a more modular approach, with the core operating system separated from such packages as the file system or networking stack. As a result, individual applications can now be updated at any time without requiring a rework or retest of the entire system. Dinyar Dastoor, vp of product management at Wind River, said: "The IoT has significantly changed the embedded landscape. Our game changing release of VxWorks 7 is a demonstration of our commitment to help companies address the new challenges and opportunities presented by it." As well as enhanced security features and additional support for safety critical applications, VxWorks 7 offers support for a range of standards and protocols such as USB, CAN, Bluetooth, FireWire and Continua, as well as out of the box networking capabilities. A combination of the microkernel and the standard kernel, built on the same VxWorks platform, allows customers to reduce development and maintenance costs by leveraging one RTOS foundation across different classes of connected devices.
