EC launches €1bn graphene initiative

The European Commission (EC) has announced the official launch of its 10 year, €1billion Graphene Flagship, an initiative it hopes will take the wonder material out of the research lab and into the real world.

The Graphene Flagship was first announced in January 2013. It was officially launched during a ceremony in Gothenburg today, together with all the academic and industrial partners. The project will be divided into two separate phases: a 30 month ramp-up phase with a total EC funding of €54m, and a steady state phase starting in 2016 with expected EC funding of €50m per year. The consortium will initially include 75 academic and industrial partners in 17 European countries. It will then be expanded with another 20 to 30 groups through an open call, to be issued next month.
