Synopsys has announced new data converters which it claims deliver more than 50% improvement in power with smaller area compared to the previous generation.

The DesignWare and data converter ip solutions have been optimised for mobile broadband wireless communication applications such as WiFi, WiMAX, lte and digital tv reception. According to Synopsys the DesignWare Data Converter ip can reach high sampling rates with strong dynamic performance, while processing signal bandwidth beyond 100MHz. The platform has been designed for high data rate standards such as WiFi (802.11ac) and home networking (G.hn), and for the direct conversion of high intermediate frequency signals. The platform consists of analogue to data converters (ADCs) and digital to analogue converters (DACs). These include 10 and 12bit pipeline ADCs running up to 250MS/S in single channel and dual channel configurations; 14bit current steering DACs running up to 400MS/S in single channel and dual channel configurations. John Koeter, vice president of marketing for IP and systems at Synopsys, said the platform was part of a continued investment in data converter IP products. "By designing this latest generation of DesignWare Data Converter IP toward ultra low power optimisation and a compact footprint, Synopsys enables designers of broadband communication, digital TV and video products to readily embed functionality into their SoCs to offer competitive differentiation with less risk and improved time-to-market."
