CSR rejects offer from Microchip

CSR has confirmed that it received an offer from Microchip Technology, but that it has been rejected. The board is now said to be considering its options for the company.

While the amount Microchip offered has not been made public, a report in the Financial Times says it could be around $3billion. Currently, CSR is valued at around $1.5bn, but its shares have climbed significantly on the takeover news. The FT story also implies that CSR is in talks with another unnamed company, with a deal 'weeks' away from conclusion. CSR merged with Zoran in 2011 – effectively a $680million takeover – in a move which was designed to create a 'global leader' in wireless connectivity, imaging, video, location aware and audio products. It then sold a chunk of its wireless operations in 2012 to Samsung, netting $310m from the deal. CSR has been shortlisted in the Electronic Product of the Year category at this year's British Engineering Excellence Awards for CSRmesh, pictured.
