Cirrus blends data conversion technologies

In a move intended to blend the best of two data conversion worlds, Cirrus Logic has launched a range of devices which combine the higher bandwidth, low distortion performance of SAR converters with high resolution, low noise performance Delta-Sigma a/d converters.

John Paulos, vice president and general manager of the company’s industrial products division, noted: “What we’ve done is to take the best of both worlds. There will be three sampling rates and a choice of 16 or 24bit resolution, all with low differential non linearity.” Cirrus sees three broad target markets for the new devices, called the CS55xx range: wide bandwidth applications requiring low noise; high precision; and low latency. Paulos added: “These devices will bring ‘eye opening’ performance benefits to those used to using SAR parts from 50 to 150kHz.” According to the company, the devices offer an easy to use solution, with input buffers, a simple control interface and a flexible serial digital interface to microcontrollers and fpgas in master or slave mode. “This breakthrough performance means that various industrial applications will be able to obtain an extremely accurate measurement of data,” John Paulos continued. “Greater measurement accuracy leads to a wealth of benefits for industrial systems such as systems for achieving tighter production yields, higher precision machine tools, improved temperature control, valve control and speed of flow, just to name a few.”
