Have a game changing idea and want to commercialise it? Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, is offering up to $100,000 to support inventions that positively impact society by connecting the physical and digital worlds.

The research institution will be awarding a 1st prize of $100k, 2nd prize of $50k and 3rd prize of $25k. All three winners will also be considered for the opportunity to work within the company to further explore their ideas, following the end of the competition. "I am excited to see the ideas that come to light through this process, and to introduce talented young scientists and engineers into the Bell Labs community," said Dr Marcus Weldon, pictured, president of Bell Labs and CTO of Alcatel-Lucent. "They will be joining some of the brightest scientists, engineers and mathematicians in the world, who continue to develop world-changing innovations." Entries are being accepted from today (20 May) until 15 July. The competition has two stages; in the first stage, up to 50 proposals will be selected to be paired with Bell Labs researchers, to help expand upon the idea and make it real. In the second stage, 10 finalists will be selected to compete for the three prizes at an event on 15 December, in front of a panel of renowned experts and industry leaders.
