Atmel has announced the launch of its maXTouch mXT112E controller. The device is optimised for 2.8 to 3.5in touchscreens and is targeted at consumer products such as digital still cameras, feature phones and gaming consoles.

According to Atmel, the device allows up to four simultaneous touches and enables true single layer touchscreens. This is said to result in screens that are thinner, lighter and brighter. The company claims the controller offers the most advanced signal processing algorithms to mitigate noise from a range of lcd displays, environmental noise and interference from after market chargers. Utilising advanced touch processing technology, it is optimised to reject unintentional touches and interpret light ones. It supports a narrow passive stylus input and has a report rate of 250Hz. "With the mass adoption of touchscreens on smartphones and tablets, consumers are demanding touchscreen capability on nearly all consumer devices," said Helen Francis, senior marketing manager, Atmel. "The launch of Atmel mXT112E helps address this need by providing consumers with a touch smart phone experience that is intuitive to use, includes better battery life, superior touch performance, and has a more intuitive interface."
