OKI Data has concluded an agreement under which OKI Digital Imaging (ODI) will acquire the land, buildings and utilities of a Japanese facility from Renesas Technology.

ODI, an OKI Data subsidiary that develops and manufactures print heads for LED printers, claimed that the acquisition will enable it to quadruple its current LED print head production capabilities. The clean room at the new facility is twice the area of the one currently in use and is situated near OKI Data's Takasaki facility, where printer development work takes place. Hideichi Kawasaki (pictured), president at OKI Electric Industry, said: "We have been shifting resources and creating strong techniques and solutions to achieve robust business growth. This is the first of many decisions I will be making with regard to developing new businesses to accelerate our growth strategy. I believe that increasing our LED production capacity will enable us to apply our competitive LED technology, not only to our printers, but also to new areas, such as ultra small displays, where growth is expected." The acquisition is expected to be completed by December, with operations scheduled to begin at the new site in April 2010.
