£10million nanotechnology health and safety centre announced

Computer chip research consortium Sematech has teamed up with researchers at the University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) on a new £10million nanotechnology health and safety research centre. Headquartered at CNSE's Albany NanoTech Complex, the centre will address emerging occupational and environmental health and safety issues around nanotechnology.

Dan Armbrust, pictured, president and ceo of Sematech, said the centre will enable new processes and advanced technologies to serve the industry's need for cost effective, efficient and safe research and manufacturing. "At least $10million in funding will be invested into the centre over the next five years, creating more than 100 high tech jobs," he said. "The centre will address the impact of exposure to nanoparticles in the work place, assess the impact and life cycles of nanomaterials and look at ways of decreasing water, energy and chemical usage while increasing efficiency." Membership in the NanoHealth and Safety Centre will be open to chipmakers, equipment and materials manufacturers and other nanotechnology, biomedical and defence operations as well as university organisations.
