How next generation led based automotive headlight designs will help keep safety in the driving seat. By Mike Richardson.

Automotive designers developing the latest light based driver assistance systems will now need to ensure their designs hit the road running. Not only do they continually face the task of optimising road illumination for vehicles while avoiding dazzling oncoming motorists, they must also be careful not to blind the driver with science. After all, safety concerns mean that too much vehicle information could distract drivers and lead to them taking their eyes off the road ahead. As one of the guiding lights of automotive lighting and electronics, Hella is busy developing led arrays as light source solutions for the headlights of the future. Consisting of several individually addressable led chips arranged in accordance with a predefined pattern onto a carrier substrate pcb, the headlights can be triggered by means of pulse width modulation allowing individual led chips to switch both on and off and generate different cut off line geometries.
