If it ain’t broke …

The many faces of Embedded Linux ensure its continued success.

Instead of embarking upon yet another article praising the virtues of embedded Linux, of which there are many, it’s worth reiterating that comparing this particular operating system with others isn’t as straightforward as it first appears. Like some, it has character traits that could be described as less than user friendly, whilst others may fit the definition of perfection. Also, it isn’t necessarily the best open source operating system available, although it is quite clearly the best known. Perhaps because of its popularity, it now has an elevated image; a victim of its own success, so to speak. Quite an achievement for an inanimate object. Although inanimate, it probably demonstrates much greater animation than any other operating system – either commercial or open source – and therein lies its success.
