Building practical codecs for video compression using DaVinci platforms. By Flavio Daffara and Dr Ajit Rao.

With high demand for digital video products in applications such as video communication, security and surveillance, industrial automation and entertainment, video compression is an essential enabler. Codec algorithms make it possible to store and transmit digital video. Typically, codecs are either industry standards – such as MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264/AVC and AVS – or proprietary algorithms, such as VP7, Real Video, Nancy and Windows Media Video. Codec technology has improved in the last decade and the latest codecs represent the third generation of video compression technology. Modern codecs achieve very high compression ratios using the processing horsepower in low cost ICs such as DSPs and ASICs. However choosing the right codec and optimising its real time implementation for a specific application remains a tough challenge.
